Exploring Mission Possibilities in the Archdiocese of Ende: A Journey of Faith, Hope, and New Beginnings

A visit to the Archdiocese of Ende, Indonesia, opens new horizons for a mission, revealing a Church rich in faith, vocations, and missionary potential.

As part of the ongoing discernment for new missionary outreach, Sr. Grace and Sr. Jency visited the Archdiocese of Ende on 24th December 2025 to explore the feasibility of initiating a new mission. Located on the island of Flores and led by Archbishop Paulus Budi Klede. The Archdiocese is marked by a strong Catholic presence, with nearly 80% of the population living an active faith life. The visit included parish interactions, meetings with clergy and religious, and exposure to the socio-pastoral realities of the region.

A Church that Inspires the Heart

What touched most the heart was the deep faith and simplicity of the people. Though many are farmers and fishermen with limited resources, they radiate generosity, joy, and a profound sense of belonging to the Church. Their active participation in parish life and their openness to missionaries create a welcoming environment that invites one to serve.

A particularly moving experience was the visit to Bekek Parish, identified as a possible place for a future mission. With around 1,000 Catholic families and over 6,000 faithful, including several outstations, the parish reflects a living and dynamic faith. The warm reception by the parish priest and faithful spoke volumes of their unity and love for the Church. The peaceful coexistence with the Muslim community further highlighted a spirit of harmony and fraternity.

Witnessing Mission in Action

During the visit, the sisters encountered various religious congregations such as the Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation, Vietnam-based sisters, Immaculate Sisters from Poland, and Indian missionaries like Sr. Ann of Lucerne. Despite being recent arrivals, these congregations have adapted beautifully to the local culture and language, engaging actively in pastoral care, family visits, social outreach, and English language education.

Their commitment was evident in the flourishing formation houses with many young vocations, a clear sign of the Spirit at work. The dedication of priests and religious, who serve with sacrifice and joy, became a powerful testimony of missionary zeal.

Voices from the Journey:

Reflecting on the experience, the Archbishop shared, “The faith of the people is strong, but they need continuous pastoral care and formation to remain rooted in Christ.”

Sr. Grace expressed, “We were deeply moved by the simplicity and generosity of the people. Though materially poor, they are rich in faith and openness.”
Sr. Jency added, “This mission land invites us—not only to serve—but to journey with the people, sharing hope and building faith together.”

An Invitation to Discern and Respond

The visit highlighted key areas that call for attention: strengthening pastoral care, empowering women, promoting English education, and providing skill-based programs for youth. These needs open doors for meaningful missionary engagement.

This journey is not just a report—it is an invitation. An invitation to listen to the call of the Spirit, to discern courageously, and to respond generously. The Archdiocese of Ende stands as a land of promise, where faith is alive, vocations are abundant, and hearts are ready to receive.

May we continue to pray, discern, and walk together, responding to God’s call to bring His love and hope to new frontiers.
